Creating An Inviting Yard

I have always been one of those people who loves to create a warm, inviting atmosphere for others, which is why I started looking at landscaping design in the first place. It was incredible to me to see how much of a difference I was able to make by adding a few new plants, and after that first project, I wanted to help other people. I started volunteering to help friends and neighbors do their landscaping, and after a few months, I had developed quite a following. This blog is all about creating a warm, inviting yard through smart landscaping and an eye for detail.

Stop Erosion Of The Shoreline Of Your Property With Rip Raps Created With Large Stones

by Addison Washington

When you buy a piece of lakefront property, it is important to take the time to hire someone to protect the edges of the property from erosion. Many people do not realize that water hitting against the shore of their property again and again will cause the soil to start to erode. As the soil erodes, the property will become smaller and smaller. A great way to stop eroding along the shoreline of your property is to have rip rap added to it. The guide below walks you through a few things to know about using rip rap around the shore of your property:

Rip Rap Stops Erosion

Rip rap is a barrier that is created around the shoreline of a property through the use of different sized stones. The water washes against the stones and the weight of the stones keep the soil from washing away every time the water hits it.

Rip Rap Is Available in Many Different Sizes

You can choose to have the rip rap created with very large stones, medium sized stones, or even with small stones. Large stones will last a long time because regardless of how choppy the water gets, the stones will not be moved because of their massive weight. They are very expensive though because it often takes a lot of work to get them into place. If you are looking for a more affordable option, you may want to consider having your rip rap created with medium and smaller sized stones.

Rip Rap Needs to be Added by Professionals

You need to have the rip rap created by professional landscapers to ensure that it is done properly. You cannot simply stack stones into a pile and expect them to work properly. The professionals will know the specific way that the stones need to be stacked to keep the soil from eroding from behind them. They can also incorporate your rip rap with the rest of your landscape design

Rip Rap Should Last a Very Long Time

There are some people who choose to have a seawall built on the edge of their property to keep the soil from eroding, but a seawall will have to be maintained on a regular basis if it is going to continue to work the way it is supposed to work. Rip rap does not have to be maintained. Once it is in place, the shoreline is protected.

After you have had rip rap added to the shoreline of your property, you will no longer have to worry about erosion. This can also serve as a great protective feature for the property because people will not be able to push their boats onto the shore of your property once the large stones are in place.
